Many high schools have fantastic English teachers and attentive college counselors. But the 3-5 essays that make up the college application are not just typical pieces of writing, nor are they just another step in the application process. The application is often the last, best chance for a student to shine in the eyes of a college, and it is the only element over which the student has complete control. It is an uncommon genre that must catch the attention of admissions officers and illuminate students’ intellect, personality, and potential

Our counselors have worked with countless Application Boot Camp® students at our annual summer Boot Camps and fostered remarkable transformations from rough draft to final, polished essays. In accord with Application Boot Camp’s® proven strategies, they will discuss potential topics, draw out the most compelling angles, and guide students through the writing process. At each step, they will offer candid feedback to make students’ writing clear and concise and their ideas fresh, personal, and unique. And they will provide motivation and set deadlines to combat writer’s block, which so often undermines students’ applications.

While the average writing tutor will cross out a few words with and make some vague suggestions, you will be taken into the heart of the writing process and come up with an exceptional, genuine final draft. The result is a much faster return on your time—not to mention a much more enjoyable writing experience and a stronger application! And, because our counselors are accustomed to tutoring students over the phone and reviewing drafts by email, they can work with students from anywhere in the world, at any time.

The Application Boot Camp® Essay Package Includes:

  • Five hours of consultation with a senior counselor. That time includes any combination of detailed written responses (via “track changes” and inserted comments) to emailed drafts or phone time to discuss ideas and read through drafts.
  • A copy of Application Boot Camps’® essay guidelines. These documents outline some of the basics components of good college essays and will give you a head-start on your consultation.
  • An email synopsis of every phone consultation. Students can use these synopses to know how drafts should evolve.
  • Consult with the counselor on as many essays as you like in the allotted time. Some essays may need only proofreading while others need to be coaxed from a blank page—they will help with both and everything in between!

For 5 hours of one-on-one essay tutoring with a senior counselor via phone the cost is $2,500.

Additional hours are available in 5 hour segments.

“B., I just wanted to begin by thanking you for all your help with my essays – I am positive they made a huge difference in the way acceptances turned out for me. The biggest news is that I got into U-Chicago. I am thrilled and can’t wait to enroll in Econ lectures with some of the smartest professors around! I am crediting you with my acceptance because I know the time we spent on my UChicago supplement gave me an edge. :) I was also accepted to Brown, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and Williams via early write. Again, thanks for all your help. I’m recommending this program, and especially you, to all my friends who are juniors in high school!”
R.W., Essay Guidance Package student, 2012

“B. gave me really great advice on essays, not to mention timely responses. The response time was key to me getting my apps done on time. B. was particularly helpful responding to the miscellaneous questions I had about recommendations, supplementary materials, etc. I would definitely recommend the essay package, it is a godsend. B. was totally up for the challenge of helping me redo my apps last minute and was very honest. Incredible!”
- Essay Guidance Package student, 2012

“Just a quick note of thanks now that the college admissions meat-grinder is over. M. was a great help with our son’s essay efforts. Good comments, quick responses and best of all M. did not “write” the essays but helped T find his own voice and words. We really appreciate his help! It was invaluable.”
- Parent, Pomona, Class of 2016

“I can’t thank you enough for the guidance, assistance and M.’s essay process. Despite the fact that my first child was an ABC success story as ED to Penn, I at first decided to go with a “lower key” (and less expensive) college counselor for my daughter who was not applying to an Ivy. What a mistake. After I reviewed her “final” application and essay before submission, I immediately reached out to Michele for assistance. Despite the fact that it was last minute-M. jumped right in. I can’t say it wasn’t without pain, but with M.’s pushing, her application transformed from OK to amazing, and her writing was never better. Her ED choice, GW, agreed and offered her a Presidential Scholarship based on merit. She was ecstatic!! And —Michigan accepted her too!! Hope these words spare another parent from repeating my mistake—Michele, Mimi and M. not only have set the bar, but no one else comes close.”
- Parent, G.W. Presidential Scholar, Class of 2016

“Hi-just a belated thank you to all of you for helping our daughter improve her applications. All 3 of us feel she has a better chance of admission now, and we so appreciate all of your efforts. You are quite an impressive bunch, and we will certainly be recommending you to others. M.-you are superhuman. Thanks again.”
- D.&M. (Parents)

“My son just got informed that he got accepted to Duke Early Decision. Honestly you did a stellar job on helping with the Common App essay. I admire the “critical thinking” you did while reviewing his essay and pushed him and guided him ruthlessly. Without your help the essay would not have come to what it was. Your contribution was invaluable. I am glad we used your help.”
- Parent, Duke Class of 2015

“Hi M.! I GOT INTO DARTMOUTH!!!!! BEST DAY EVER!! Thank you for all your help on my essays and activity sheet. I know that made a huge difference in my application. You definitely made me a better writer and you were so easy to work with. I am even more ecstatic that I do not have to write regular supplements! I’ll probably be needing you in a few years for grad school!”
- Student, Dartmouth Class of 2015

“I know that your essay guidance helped me stand out and played a huge role in my success. Additionally, I learned a lot from the editing process and I know that my writing abilities have improved. Thank you so much! I am so excited to be attending an Ivy League school this fall!”
- Transfer Student, Cornell Class of 2015

“I think that you are amazing and I can’t thank you enough. I know that the application process is a bit like creating a mosaic and that each little piece creates a picture of a larger whole. But I do think that the essays are the way for the student to show things about themselves that might not be apparent from the statistics, or to help reinforce the other things that the admissions counselor reads in the recommendations, and support the statistics they see. I thought that my daughter’s essays, especially the supplement essays, were excellent and so I wanted to send a sincere thank you for your coaching and input. It is incredible that you helped to steer both girls into their dream school and you obviously have an incredible talent for what you are doing. I hope you enjoy it!”
- Parent, Brown Class of 2015 and 2013

“Our daughter has been accepted to Scripps, and she is so excited! We could not have done it without your help. Thank you for the advice on J.’s application. M. did an amazing job of getting J. to write very impressive essays.”
- Parent

“GUESS WHAT! I AM GOING TO BROWN!!!!!!!! I received my acceptance letter on Monday!
And I was crying so much from happiness that my brother thought I got rejected. I am SO excited and SO happy and I am SO THANKFUL for all your help! You really made my application amazing and it would not have been what it was without you. I owe a big part of my acceptance to you and I really appreciate all the help and advice you gave me. Not only did you immensely improve my essays, but you dealt with my procrastination as well. Without your guidance I would have been rather lost, and I probably would not have been able to say that I get to spend my next four years at Brown University with my sister. (She says thanks as well! We’re excited to go to the same college!) Attending Brown has been my dream and you played a big part in helping me achieve it. Once again thank you so much. I am more grateful than you know.”
- Student, Brown Class of 2015

“It is with enormous pleasure that I learned this afternoon of my acceptance to the Pomona College class of 2015, Early Decision. I am deeply appreciative of all your time, effort and patience editing with me. I have you to thank for this success. I learned a lot from our process and I hope that I have become a more thoughtful writer under your precise tutelage. I’m excited to continue my studies in Chinese, math, and the sciences in southern California near my brother and other family. It sounds funny, but I’ll miss all our sessions. I hope you’ll still be doing this when I am applying to grad school! Again, many thanks for your terrific help.”
- Student, Pomona Class of 2015

“Thank you seems inadequate for all your support this fall, but my husband and I are saying it with feeling! Your help made all the essay writing as manageable as it’s probably possible to make it. Eight school applications, count ‘em! Our son has worked hard and as his parents we are thrilled for him. We are in your debt. I do hope that our paths cross one day.”
- Parent, Pomona Class of 2015

“JM. just left our home yesterday, and he is simply FABULOUS. I know you know that, but I wanted to add our name to the list of families who adore him. What a great guy—he is a perfect person for A. to work with. He left yesterday around 5:00 pm, and at about 5:05 pm my son A. called me and he said “Mom, thank you so very, very much for getting M. He is such a huge help.” So…my adolescent son thanked me—wow! Clearly his college application will be stronger because of M.s help.”
- Personal Application Boot Camp Parent, 2010

“M. – I hope you know how much we valued your expertise and professionalism as our son wrote his essay – it was an enormous help and we think of you as a friend we hope to meet someday…If you saw the letters of congratulations that have been pouring in from the main office at school, as well as from many of his teachers, you would be so proud and could see first hand how highly regarded he is. We are thrilled that Dartmouth recognized S. as a student who will thrive there.”
- Parent, Dartmouth ’14

“After so much interaction, the fruit of my labor and your keen harvesting and molding, I have been accepted to Dartmouth. I would just like to thank you for everything that you’ve done for me over the past eight months with my application process to Dartmouth. I very much appreciate all the essay revisions given to me as well as the fact that you looked at my essays very late in this process. You have a real talent in extracting the best insights from a stream of words. In no small part due to your assistance, I am ecstatic that I will be a member of Dartmouth’s incoming class of 2013. Sincere Thanks!”
K. A.

“A quick note to say how pleased we were with M.. He was a huge help to my daughter, and in the end helped her write an essay far beyond what she anticipated she could do. I don’t think it’s easy working with stress-ridden teenage kids, but M. seems to know just how much to push. We are truly grateful for his help, and I have told him as much.”
Parent

“Hi M., Everything worked out very well for R as he was accepted in the regular round at Williams. He is thrilled! He is also in at Colgate, Colby, Hamilton, and UVM Honors College. I want to thank you for all your help because I know it made a big difference in the results! Best wishes,”
A. (Student)

“Thank you so much for all of your help! I’m really excited about my acceptance to Yale and couldn’t have done it without your essay help! I appreciate your working with me at such inconvenient times.”
S. S. (Yale)

“M’s help with my son went above and beyond what we ever expected. My son presented a compelling application and the result was acceptances at SIX colleges all of which were slightly above what his scores and grades indicated…All I can say is WOW.”
T. K. (Father)

“Thank you for recommending M. He is absolutely outstanding and a terrific asset to your team. I would recommend him to anyone without reservation. I was somewhat skeptical at first since the communication between M. and J. has been entirely via the Internet. However, M. exceeded any of my expectations for responsiveness, creativity and providing practical recommendations. One of more significant results is that with M’s advice J. has become more confident and the quality of his essays have improved considerably. He is thrilled with his early acceptance to University of Michigan and University of Chicago and we are awaiting regular decisions.”
P. S. (Father)

“Our daughter is now a proud member of Brown’s freshman class of 2009-2010. As an early admit, she is now freed from the rigors of applying to 9 other schools. We have contacted M. to thank him immensely for his “spot on” guidance of K. on her Brown application essays. He was indeed the stitch in time that saved 9 (9 other college applications !). We have a 2nd daughter (8th grade now) that truly will need some part of your fantastic services. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
C. H. (Father)

“I am home from my semester at Emory. Despite not hearing back yet from all of the schools I applied to as a transfer applicant I wanted to give you an update on the schools I’ve heard back from thus far. I was accepted to Tufts and Georgetown! I am very excited about the options that I already have and will continue to update you as I hear back. And of course thank you again for all of your help; I really think that the essays are making all the difference.”
- Transfer Student, Class of 2013

“This year our daughter was admitted to the majority of schools she applied to as a transfer student. Her acceptances included two Ivy League schools and several other very selective universities. We are convinced that her essays played an important part in her success. M. was easy for her to work with and provided just the right suggestions, guidance and encouragement.”

- Transfer Student Parent

“I am writing to give you my very exciting final decision. I got a call yesterday morning that I was accepted for the fall term at Brown so I will now officially be attending! I just wanted to thank you one last time, as Brown was my dream school and I never could have expected that I would really end up there. I have no doubt that your help and guidance on my application essays in addition to this recent letter requesting fall matriculation made all the difference in my success not only at Brown but at all the other schools as well. I am so excited to go to Brown this fall I have already began looking at classes and extracurricular opportunities. I hope the end of your year and beginning of summer are going well!”
